How Will Medicare Plans Make Your Life Easier?

Medicare is a federal health insurance

program for people aged 65 and older and certain disabled people younger than 65. Medicare provides assistance in paying for doctor visits, hospital stays, home health care, prescription drugs, and other medical care.

Run by the federal government, Medicare works with private insurance companies that sell prescription drug plans like the Medicare Advantage plans consisting of coverage for Medicare Part A, B, C, and D.

Hospital Insurance (Hospital Deductible and Coinsurance) – Part A

Hospital Insurance, or Medicare Part A, pays for inpatient hospital care, like semi-private rooms, meals, and other services you get while an inpatient.

Part A covers:

• Hospital stays. No deductibles or coinsurance to pay for covered services in a hospital.

• A skilled nursing facility care. After you leave the hospital, you don’t have to pay any deductibles or coinsurance (though you may have to pay a daily coinsurance).

• Health care at home. Home health care deemed medically necessary will be paid by Medicare under Part A for up to 100 visits per year if you need skilled care after a hospital stay.

• Other outpatient services and supplies deemed medically necessary by a doctor, such as physical therapy. Medicare pays 80 percent, in most cases, of reasonable charges for these services, with no deductible or coinsurance required from the beneficiary.

Medical Insurance (Coinsurance and Deductible) – Part B

Many services and supplies are covered by Part B, but not everything. A copayment or coinsurance for many services and supplies are required along with deductibles and coinsurance payments for some services, including medical equipment and supplies, ambulance services, and therapy services.

Types of services that Part B covers:

• Ambulance Services. Medically necessary ground and air ambulance transports.

• Home Health Care. Medically necessary skilled in-home nursing care provided through a home health agency.

• Hospice Care. Hospice care for terminally ill patients diagnosed with less than six months to live.

• Medicare Advantage Plans. Designed to give you more options than Original Medicare, the MAP (Medicare Advantage Plan) may include prescription drug coverage or dental benefits.

Prescription Drug Coverage (Deductible and Coinsurance) – Part D

Part D is a Medicare prescription drug coverage covering medications used to treat medical conditions. The program pays for drugs on its approved list of covered prescriptions, and you may be eligible for financial assistance with your medications. The majority of plans cover prescription medications that fall into one of five categories:

• Medications that treat chronic illnesses such as Diabetes or High Blood Pressure

• Vaccines against infections such as Influenza and Pneumonia

• Drugs for cancer and other life-threatening illnesses

• Medications used to treat mental illnesses like depression or schizophrenia, as well as

• Any other medications required to treat various ailments
